Why this workshop

A construction project is an ever-changing combination of a high number of variables combined in a long-term commitment. Even on a small villa, you can have a project running for an entire year from initial sign-off to the final handover. Materials tend to be subject to price fluctuations; specialised resources are in short supply; and capital investments tend to be relatively high with long amortisation periods. Managing a construction project requires an understanding of all aspects of this complex endeavour. In this module, you will utilise a managerial approach to analysing construction projects, considering the way decisions are made, the tools that are most important in specific situations and the contextual factors that make construction projects unique.

Workshop overview

Construction projects are complex and expensive and usually involve multidisciplinary teams working together. This workshop specifically examines project management as it applies to the construction sector. The workshop introduces current and recent developments in the field of construction project management, with emphasis on the construction project life cycle and construction market factors.

The workshop also covers design management, quality risk management and supply chain management, including the fundamentals of construction business decisions. Tools and techniques will be presented within each topic covered.

Workshop benefit

Oncompletion of the workshop, a participant is expected to understand:

  • Understand the process and nature of construction project management;
  • Understand market factors in construction projects;
  • Understand both technical and commercial aspects in construction projects such as managing risk, resource management, health and safety, supply chain logistics and contractual implications;
  • Understand and apply a range of tools and techniques relevant to managing construction projects.

Learning outcomes

At theend of this module, participants will have gained an understanding of theissues involved. They will be able to:

  • Define the process and characteristics of construction project management
  • Discuss the characteristics and market factors in construction project management
  • Identify the practical and commercial aspects in the project life cycle
  • Assess the importance of project costings/finances, resource management, health and safety, supply chain logistics and contractual agreements
  • Discuss how methods and techniques can be used in handling extent of logistics and supply chain management in construction projects
